Undergraduate Research

Most of our undergraduate majors participate in research throughout the year by joining a research group. This experience helps students with career decisions and gives them the opportunity to use state-of-the-art research equipment. The Physics department’s goal is for 100% of its majors to be engaged in undergraduate research while at K-State.

Students develop skills in computing, electronics, radiation detection, using lasers, building particle detectors, vacuum science, and other technically advanced areas.

Students present their research results both locally and at national meetings, and have won prestigious national scholarships such as the Goldwater and NSF Graduate Research Fellowship based on their research.

Furthermore, most of our students are paid for their research experience.

Undergraduate research experience is a valuable part of a student's education whatever their eventual career path may be.

How do you become involved in research?

  • Explore the webpages of faculty in the department and identify those who have research areas that sound interesting.
  • Reach out via email or stop by their office to explore the possibility of working with them as an undergraduate research assistant.
  • Discuss the topic with our advisor or director of the majors program.
