Mentoring

Students who have declared Physics as a major and who are currently enrolled in or have passed “Physics III, Relativity, and Quantum Physics” (PHYS 325) will be assigned a Faculty Mentor by the department. This Mentor is in addition to (not instead of) the department’s Academic Advisor.

Mentees are expected to meet with their Faculty Mentors at least once per semester. Meetings should include discussions about Mentee’s long-term and short-term professional goals, as well as conversations about general well being. Over time, it is expected that the Mentors and Mentees will develop a professional relationship that allows the Mentees to learn from a practicing Physicist.

Faculty Mentors are meant to support Mentee’s growth and professional development over the course of their undergraduate career. This may include:

  • Advanced and elective Physics course selections.
  • Academic success.
  • Identifying, engaging with, and excelling with research opportunities in the department.
  • Getting involved or improving in teaching in the department.
  • Exploring opportunities beyond K-State's Physics Department, such as REUs or applying to graduate schools.
  • Letters of recommendation.
  • Involvement in Physics Club, outreach events, and information about possible conferences.
