Scaffolded Questions in Three Dimensional Learning (Experiment)

Number of REU Participants: 1

Can we assess three-dimensional learning (3DL) (in particular, the scientific practices) with sca7ffolded questions? Scaffolding is an approach to writing homework or exam questions where a larger question is broken down in to several smaller ones. In interviews, we have given two different questions (let’s call them A and B) that align with the same aspects of 3DL to several students. In some of those cases, question A included scaffolding and question B did not, while in other cases, the reverse was true. This project will require a qualitative analysis of interview data to investigate what we can learn about how well scaffolded questions can (or cannot) assess scientific practices. No special training or preparation is needed to be a part of this project.
