Reaching Beyond the LHC Energy with Top Quarks

The goal of the LHC is to discover new particles to help resolve open questions about the universe we live in. In 2012, the LHC delivered on that goal with the observation of the Higgs boson and subsequent study has confirmed that the Higgs boson indeed posses the predicted properties based on its role in electroweak symmetry breaking and the generation of fermion masses. However, the lack of subsequent particle discoveries forces us to consider that any new particles may be beyond the energy reach of the LHC. This talk will review the motivation for believing that there must be additional particles that haven't been discovered yet, and will discuss strategies—focusing on physics associated with top quarks—for searching for such particles even in the case that their masses are beyond the LHC's reach.
