Awards highlight dedication and excellence
The K-State community has recognized the outstanding achievements of several of our staff members in the past year and a half through various recognition initiatives, acknowledging their exemplary performance and dedication to the department and the university's mission.
In 2024, Peter Nelson, research technologist, was recognized with the University's excellence award for technical and professional excellence at the Classified Employee Recognition Ceremony and Kim Elliott, Accountant III, received the meritorious service award for outstanding contributions. Kim and Peter are crucial members of our team, and these awards are a testament to their dedication and impact.
Kim's 10 years with the department have left a significant mark across the main office. She has consistently demonstrated a willingness to take on new roles with greater responsibility, all while maintaining a positive and team-focused approach.
Peter's role in our department's lecture demonstration room is absolutely critical. He has profoundly impacted the learning experience for tens of thousands of students over his more than two decades of service. Peter consistently elevates our demonstrations, ensuring an exceptional student experience by introducing innovative and engaging techniques. His dedication extends beyond the classroom, with invaluable support for events like K-State Open House, K-12 outreach programs, summer camps, and various engagement activities.
The College of Arts and Sciences honored Kim Coy with the Annette Maggio Award for Administrative and Support Staff in 2025. Kim has served the department since 1985 in various roles. She currently works with our graduate student population, which has proven to be her favorite as she loves working with the students. According to physics head Tim Bolton, Kim's selection was due to her "astonishingly broad and deep range of competencies," consistently recognized through excellent evaluations and a prior USS Meritorious Service Award in 2022.
Cynthia Carlyon, Math/Physics shared service accountant, was selected as a recipient of the March Staff Spotlight Award. Cindy was nominated for her positive attitude and commitment to creating a welcoming and pleasant work environment for everyone. Her nomination read: "Cindy brings a positive attitude to the workplace. She has a sunny and easygoing personality and really cares about making the work environment a pleasant experience for everyone."
At the University Support Staff Recognition Ceremony in May, Andy Thurlow was honored for 15 years of service, and Austin Roberts was recognized for 10 years of service. Andy runs the professional instrument shop in the department where he designs and builds state-of-the-art equipment to further our research efforts. Roberts serves as a teaching laboratory specialist, where he assists in setting up demonstrations and can be counted on to help out as a departmental resource for various projects.
Felisa Osburn, former Math/Physics librarian, was recognized as support staff of the year for the K-State Libraries and subsequently named the University support staff person of the year. Her dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment have made a lasting impact. Felisa retired in July, concluding her impactful career with K-State.
