Welcome Buddho Chakrabarti to the Faculty
And welcome him and his family to the USA
Buddhapriya (Buddho) Chakrabarti, a leading expert in soft materials and computational modeling, joined the department in January 2025. He is part of an interdisciplinary team advancing the university's biomanufacturing research initiative.
Following the completion of his doctorate in physics from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, Buddho held postdoctoral positions at institutions including Harvard, the University of California-Los Angeles, and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He then became an associate professor at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom (UK), where he focused on materials science and biological physics.
Chakrabarti's journey began in Calcutta (now Kolkata), a city rich in culture and history, where he completed his undergraduate studies. Although from the same region, he and his wife, Sucharita, met while pursuing advanced degrees in the United States. Their family, now numbering three, includes their son, Aarohan, nicknamed "Theo" due to his father's theoretical physics background. Aarohan is a spirited toddler eager to explore his independence. Interestingly, each family member was born on a different continent.
Life in the UK for the Chakarbarti family revolved around the dynamic city of Sheffield, renowned for its industrial past and nestled near the breathtaking Peak District National Park. Their home was a sanctuary near Hathersage, a village whose charm was enhanced by its association with the Brontë sisters and serving as a setting for "Jane Eyre". They found solace and joy in traversing the Peak District's scenic trails and driving through its picturesque landscapes, especially after the pandemic restrictions lifted and the open road called to them. With Theo along for the adventure, they embarked on a journey across the UK, experiencing the diverse tapestry of the country – from the inviting warmth of Brighton in the south to the wild beauty of Inverness, the fabled home of the Loch Ness Monster.
As they begin a new chapter in Manhattan, they look forward to being part of a very warm and welcoming community. The move to "The Little Apple" promises to be a wonderful experience for their family, filled with new adventures and opportunities.
