Students Gaining Physics Research Experience this Summer

Fifteen students from across the USA secured spots in the K-State Physics Department’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. The program is a competitive research internship that gives students learning opportunities in addition to a stipend, room and board, and travel expenses.

Students arrived this week to begin a 10-week program that allows them to be associated with a research project, where they are working closely with a faculty member and other researchers in the department.

Participants spend their days focused on research, working closely with their mentors. They are able to learn about various physics research areas through lectures presented by department faculty and discuss ethical issues with philosophy faculty members Bruce Glymour and Amelia Hicks. At the end of the program, the students give a final oral or poster presentation summarizing their research projects.

The REU program is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), with additional funding from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and NSF’s EPSCoR program.
