Physics Outstanding Graduate Student Awardees Named

The Department of Physics announces the recipients of its annual Physics Graduate Student Awards for 2015-16.

Yuli Heinson has been named Outstanding Graduate Student Researcher by the physics department. She is researching light scattering by irregularly shaped particles.

Heinson was nominated by her doctoral adviser, Chris Sorensen, Cortelyou-Rust University distinguished professor of physics. “Her work with me is cutting edge and is carving out an entirely new way to study and thereby understand light scattering by particles,” says Sorensen.

Yuli received a BS from Harbin Normal University in China in 2010 and MS from Creighton University in 2012.

Yuli will present a poster of her research on Tuesday, May 10, outside of CW 119.

Bahar Modir is being honored for Outstanding Service in Teaching. She was nominated by Professor Brett DePaola for her work in an online course - Physics 102 - Physics for Policymakers.

DePaola says, “Think about this: she maintained an outstanding GPA, she was teaching on overload, she developed a totally new (to her and to me) technology for distance teaching, and she received outstanding TEVALS to boot. How can you beat that?”

Bahar received a BS from Arak University in 2006 and MS from University of Tehran, in Iran in 2011.
