Physics Department to Host Jefferson Science Fellow Lecture on Climate Change

The Department of Physics is pleased to host Alice Bean, professor of physics at the University of Kansas, who will give a Jefferson Science Fellow Distinguished Lecture. The lecture, "Engaging the Public on Climate Changes" will be held Tuesday, March 29, at 4:30 pm in Room 102 of Cardwell Hall.

As a Jefferson Science Fellow from 2014- 2015, Bean worked with the Office of Religion and Global Affairs at the U.S. Department of State on climate change and environmental issues.

Dr. Bean will speak about what she learned about climate change science as well as how the public views scientists, how science can influence policy, and how to communicate about science.

Bean obtained a BA in physics and a BS in information and computer science from the University of California at Irvine, and an MS and PhD in physics from Carnegie Mellon University. She was a postdoctoral researcher at University of California at Santa Barbara prior to joining the faculty at the University of Kansas in 1993. She initiated the Quarked project (www.quarked.org), which aims to teach children and others about particle physics in a fun engaging way. Bean is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

Jefferson Science Fellows spend a year working with the U.S. State Department or U.S. Agency for International Development, providing current expertise in the science, technology, engineering, and medical areas that influence policy decisions.
