Abstract

It is a strikingly common experience for students in undergraduate or graduate physics programs to begin a job search and quickly realize that few job postings outside academia explicitly use the word "physics" in the position title. Despite this, the American Institute of Physics reports that physics graduates tend to have strong employment prospects immediately after finishing their degrees. So, where have all the physics majors gone? They are still out there, but many are "hidden" physicists. While their business cards may not mention physics, many former physics majors apply the transferable skills they honed during their studies in their day-to-day work. In this presentation, I will explore national trends in the first destinations for physics graduates and discuss strategies to help current students plan effectively for life beyond graduation.
