The Australian Synchrotron is a third generation light source located in Melbourne, Australia. Since coming into operation in 2007 it has captured the imagination and inspired scientist and the public alike. The wonders of technology and science of the nano-world explored by the x-ray beamlines and the power of high energy particles has also drawn in artists, eager to understand, interpret and represent in their own unique way the wonders of nature. This talk will give a history of the Australian Synchrotron, an overview of the current status and present some work from one of the artists in residence who has added new dimensions to Australia's largest science labs.
Associate Professor Mark Boland is Principal Accelerator Physicist at the Australian Synchrotron and Principal Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He is a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Stanford University and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory from Aug '14 until Feb '15 working on many aspects of particle accelerators, detectors and synchrotron light. His research is on building experimental facilities for time resolved measurements including low emittance storage rings, high gradient linacs and free electrons lasers. Having lived across the US, Europe and Asia, Mark is also heavily involved in the organizing committees for the International Particle Accelerator Conference and the International Beam Instrumentation Conference series which rotate through these three regions.
