Recitation grade

The general rules outlined in the course syllabus apply here, too. Each week I'll collect one of the assigned problems or questions at the start of the hour, and grade it before the next class. There will be 14 “official'' assignments during the semester, starting with week 2 (due Jan. 29). Each of the 14 assignments is worth 10 points, or 140 total; the total homework grade will be multiplied by 200/140 to determine the recitation grade. The assignment for the first week (due Jan. 22) will be graded on an extra-credit basis, and added on as a bonus. If you have not been able to do the problem chosen for grading, you may turn in any other problem from the assignment for up to half credit.

Grading of homework problems

See “How to do homework problems" in the General Physics 1 syllabus. To get full credit, you must state what you are looking for, indicate a strategy, and show clearly how your answer (with units) was obtained. Partial credit is available. This is a rough, typical grading guide:

Just writing down a numerical answer                             0 points

Stating clearly what you are looking for, with units           2-3 points

Made a good try, but went off the track                          4-6 points

Got stuck, but asked an insightful question                       5-7 points

Solution basically OK, but statement of strategy

missing, units wrong or missing,                                  7-9 points

Help on Homework

Do not hesitate to contact me with questions regarding the homework. Help is also available in the physics department’s help center in room CW224. The schedule is available on the web at http://www.phys.ksu.edu/submenu/teaching.htm.

University Undergraduate Honor System

It is expected that all students will adhere to the University's undergraduate honor system. Please refer to the “Academic Dishonesty'' policy in the K-State Undergraduate Catalog and the Undergraduate Honor System Policy on the KSU web page at http://www.ksu.edu/honor/. The honor pledge (“On my honor as a student, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this academic work") must be written out and signed by the student on all exams and homework in order for the grade to be recorded. Please note that you are encouraged to work with (not to copy from) other students, or to ask instructors for help in doing homework assignments. However, if you work with someone, please acknowledge it: put “I worked with ...'', or “I had help from ...'' on your homework. This will not reduce your grade.

Students with Disabilities

If you have any condition such as a physical or learning disability which will make it difficult for you to carry out the work as outlined here, or which will require academic accommodations, please notify the lecturer and contact the Disabled Students Office (Holton 202) during the first two weeks of class.
