Tom Gray's Retirement
Party
Professor of Physics
Throughout his career Dr. Tom Gray was an active contributor to many aspects of KSU's research and teaching program. In teaching, he very willingly took on the responsibilities for teaching both General Physics and Engineering Physics. Both of these courses have rather large enrollments and require significant administrative effort as well as teaching talent. In addition, Dr. Gray has frequently taught courses for our undergraduate physics majors and was the mainstay in teaching Classical Mechanics for a number of years. This course has particular importance because it is the first course that students take after completing the introductory sequence. Thus, the effort required in this course is sometimes a shock to some of our undergraduate students. Dr. Gray approached the course and the students in a caring way that helped them succeed. Whenever he sensed a problem, he would inform the other appropriate faculty so that we could be sure that the students were given their best chances to succeed. Thus, Dr. Gray provided significant contributions to our teaching program for a very long time.
Dr. Gray has been a very active member of the research team at the James R. Macdonald Laboratory. He conducted basic research on the results of collisions among atoms during his career at KSU. As the Laboratory grew to international stature during his years at KSU Dr. Gray accepted ever increasing administrative responsibilities for the Laboratory's operations. As an associate director of the Laboratory he has had major responsibilities for assuring that the accelerator and related equipment is functioning correctly. His abilities to diagnose problems and solve them quickly combined with an intuition based on many years of experience with atomic accelerators have served him, the Department, and the University well.
Throughout the years Dr. Gray's efforts have helped us reach international prominence in experiment atomic physics and has helped assure that we keep the welfare of the students foremost in our minds.
