This drawing describes what happens in a bulk effect model:

The only change in the system is the dielectric constant of the medium, as a function of concentration. This basically alters the index of refraction of the solution.

This drawing describes the thin film model:

The thickness of the film increases as more nanoparticles are added to the solution.
