Electronics
In
addition to data analysis, there was a hands on aspect to the research
experience.
Two
electrical components needed to be made to support the data collection.
1
– Decoupling Box
The
function of this device is to allow the detector to be read with an
oscilloscope. Two of the circuits in the diagram are fit into the box.
2
– Dropout Relay Box
Since MCPs are expensive, it is prudent to take measures to
protect them. This box has a twofold function. First, if the power goes out and
comes back on again, the reset on the box must be hit for it to allow power
through again. Secondly, and more complex, this circuit protects the detector
from getting hit by too many ions. A signal comes in from a rate meter and a
threshold voltage is set. Once the threshold is reached, power is cut and must
be reset.
My
thanks to Scott Chainey for his help on understanding these circuits and
providing the schematics.
