Text:
The Physical Universe, Krauskopf and Beiser, 9th or 10th
Edition
This
course applies the physical principles you learnt in PWI to three major topics:
1. Chemistry and Life. Chapters 9-12
2. The Earth. Chapters 13-15
3. The Universe. Chapters 16-18
Reading the text is important but because there is
more material in the text than we can reasonably cover (and because I will
include more up-to-the-minute data on some topics), your class notes are
important as well. Exams and tests
will be based upon the lecture notes.
Grading: There will be three in-class tests worth
100 marks each and a comprehensive final exam worth 200 marks. Your grade will
be based on your two best test scores plus the final exam. There will be no
make-up exams. If you will be away on a university function (debate, athletics,
choir, etc.) on a test date we can probably arrange for you to take the test
before the scheduled date provided that one week's advanced notice is provided
and an official letter on letterhead paper is produced.
The
grading scale will be:
Score Grade
340-400: A
(85 – 100%)
280-339: B
(70 – 84%)
240-279: C
(60 – 69%)
200-239: D
(50 – 59%)
0-199: F
(0 – 49%)
Disabilities:
If you have any condition such as a physical or
learning disability, which will make it difficult for you to carry out the work
as I have outlined it or which will require academic accommodations, please
notify me and contact the Disabled Students Office (Holton 202), in the first
two weeks of the course.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and may
be punished by failure on the exam, paper or project; failure in the course;
and/or expulsion from the University. For more information refer to the
“Academic Dishonesty” policy in K-State Undergraduate Catalog and the
Undergraduate Honor System Policy on the Provost’s web page at http://www.ksu.edu/honor/.
