Interactions of Laser Light at its Highest Intensity
Discussed are the relativistic interactions of
ultra-high-intensity light with matter, which are studied with the
150-terawatt-peak-power Diocles laser, which was recently commissioned at the
University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Bright, ultrashort-duration (femtosecond)
pulses of energetic x-rays and charged-particle beams are generated. The
applications of these unique radiation sources to problems in physical science,
biomedicine, defense and homeland security will also be covered.
